SILK ROAD: DRUGS, DEATH AND THE DARK WEB

The ‘Dread Pirate Roberts’ was the mysterious criminal mastermind behind the darknet website ‘Silk Road’.  But it would be a lowly tax inspector from the IRS who finally unmasked the creator of this ‘Amazon of Illegal Drugs’ as Ross Ulbricht, a 29-year-old computer nerd who would do anything – even murder – to protect his empire.

NO MAN LEFT BEHIND

Black Hawk pilots downed in Somalia, DEA agents kidnapped in Colombia, SAS soldiers cut adrift in the Iraqi desert and Green Berets under fire from a Taliban mountain fortress, this heart-pumping war series tells the extraordinary tales of veterans who somehow survived against the odds.  I exec’d the 6 eps, all shot in South Africa.

PARANORMAL WITNESS SEASON 5

The final season of PW and we went out with a bang! A no-holds-barred alien abduction story with the most credible of contributors, killer CGI and a caravan being sucked up into space! What’s not to love? As it was the swan-song episode of a show I’d nursed and loved for 5 years, I co-directed this, the 64th and final show.

REVELATION: THE END OF DAYS

What would happen if the prophecies of Revelation came true today?  In the opening scenes of the film, a series of huge explosions rock Jerusalem bringing down the Wailing Wall, and hundreds of thousands of children mysteriously vanish when an almighty super-storm devastates the US.  I directed this ‘found footage’ drama.

PARANORMAL WITNESS SEASONS 1, 2, 3 & 4

‘Scary because it’s true’, that’s the tag-line for the Syfy cult horror smash that I exec’d for, err, 5 years of my life.  64 fully dramatised horror mini-movies over 5 seasons.  Poltergeists, possessions and close encounters have never felt so terrifyingly real.  I filmed a ton of interviews for the show, and coiffed every script and cut.

THE REAL GOODFELLA

Martin Scorsese’s 1990 gangster classic ‘Goodfellas’ is based on the true story of  Henry Hill.  But as the ‘retired mobster’ says himself, “Marty left a lot of the good stuff out”.  This “Locked Up Abroad” Season Opener is a rocketing tale of drugs, more drugs, betrayal, and murder.  The real guy.  The real words.  The real story.

GET OUT ALIVE – SOMALI PIRATE ATTACK

In 2008, a year before “Captain Phillips”, two British security guards board the ‘Biscaglia’, an oil tanker passing through the Gulf of Aden en route to the Med.  An easy gig – ten grand in the bank and a sun tan …until the ship is hijacked by gun-toting, drug-crazed Somali pirates armed with AK47s and a rocket propelled grenade launcher.

WHO FRAMED JESUS?

The most famous murder in history and we all know who did it – right?  Judas, the High Priest and the crowd of Jews who bayed for Jesus’ blood.  But pore over the gospels and replay the familiar scenes of the Passion in the style of an Agatha Christie whodunnit and a new cast of villains emerge from the shadows.

SURVIVING DISASTER – HIJACK

Don’t be put off by the title.  This cult show gives the disaster genre a welcome kick up the ass.  Imagine Bear Grylls inserted into a Bruce Willis movie and you’re not far off.  Shot in Hollywood, I directed 5 out of 10 of these all-stunts-and-explosions, fully scripted action dramas.  “Will you be a survivor or a statistic?  The choice is yours.”

SURVIVING DISASTER – MALL ATTACK

This episode has our hero battling a Kenya-style terrorist attack on a suburban mall.  The LA Times billed it as an “action packed tutorial designed to look like a CNN reporter embedded in Bagdad with the war going on around him – the latest high octane entertainment to hit Spike, the testosterone fuelled cable network”.

SECRETS OF THE FORBIDDEN CITY

“Indiana Jones meets The Last Emperor with the odd Memoirs Of A Geisha thrown in …fascinating, relevant and revelatory”, said Time Out.   The Observer called it “sumptuous …well worth an hour a half of your Saturday evening” and the Indepedent described it as “stunning …with the narrative style of an airport thriller”.

THE FLOATING BROTHEL

A bawdy romp, it won Gold in the American Film and Television Awards and was nominated for an Australian Logie. The adventures of a motley collection of whores, thieves and con-artists despatched in 1788 on an all-female convict ship to the far side of the world only to become the great matriarchs of Australia.

CRUSADES – CRESCENT AND THE CROSS

This Emmy Award-winning series, one of the History Channel’s biannual ‘marquee productions’, charts the rise and fall of the Crusader Empire.  ‘Lord of the Rings’ opened up the possibility for full-blown CGI battles in the cinema, now it’s TV’s turn.

OUTLAWED: THE REAL NED KELLY

When Ned Kelly burst out of an Australian pub in 1880 encased in a suit of iron, he was seen as a knight in shining armour blasting the nation from the shackles of corrupt British rule.  But violent bank heists and a plot to massacre a trainload of police officers shed a different light – that the man was just a murderous thug.

THE ANATOMISTS – THE SHOWMEN

From the gladiatorial fights of Ancient Rome to the public anatomy theatres of Renaissance Italy and on to the grisly grave robbing of 18th century Britain, the dark history of the Anatomists reveals that centuries of medical advance have come at a very bloody price.  I series directed this headline Channel 4 series.

THE ANATOMISTS – A Modern Frankenstein

This landmark three part history series was triggered when “modern Frankenstein” Gunther Von Hagens first brought his controversial anatomy show to town.  An exhibition of thirty human corpses flayed, dissected, pickled and posed like art works for public show.  I warn you, this clip is not for the faint-hearted.
